Program: Parent-Child Home

PCHP QuoteMiss Ruby’s Kids is a replication of the Parent-Child Home Program, a proven parenting and family literacy program that encourages verbal interaction and educational play between parents and their 2 and 3 year old children in families that have had limited exposure to educational opportunities and activities. The National Parent-Child Home Program provides technical assistance and training for implementing best practices in the program.

Only families whose children are at risk of school failure are eligible for the program. Trained Home Visitors visit the parent and the child together twice a week during the two-year program for up to half an hour for each visit. Visits take place during the school year to avoid conflicts with older children’s schedules. Program graduates enter preschool ready to learn. Published research demonstrates that the PCHP is a proven tool to prevent high school dropouts.

┬áHome Visitors model parenting techniques and encourage the parents to adapt and adopt them. Home Visitors help parents realize the importance of their role as their children’s first and most important teacher, generating enthusiasm for learning and verbal interaction through the use of engaging books and stimulating toys, which are gifts to the families. In addition to the program being provided at no cost to the participating families, respect for the privacy, ethnic and cultural heritage of all families is essential.

Two Site Coordinators were trained by the Parent-Child Home Program’s National Center. The Home Visitors are trained by the Site Coordinators and receive ongoing support during the weekly staff meetings. Our site adheres to the carefully developed and well-tested program model to ensure high quality and consistent results.
