A Letter From The Chair

Our Inspiration

Miss RubyMiss Ruby’s Kids is named for Ruby Middleton Forsythe (1905-1992), a passionate educator from Charleston, South Carolina. Beginning in 1937 until shortly before her death in 1992, Miss Ruby’s dedication and limitless energy were devoted to the children who attended the one-room school, which still stands today in Pawleys Island. Graduates of Miss Ruby’s School are among the leading citizens of Georgetown County and remember her high standards not only in what they learned but also in how they conducted themselves. Ruby Middleton Forsythe died in 1992, but her dream of equal educational opportunity for all children continues through Miss Ruby’s Kids.

Our History

Mother with childMiss Ruby’s Kids is named for Mrs. Ruby Forsythe, a passionate teacher for over 50 years on the Waccamaw Neck in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Poverty and the resulting poor school performance in Georgetown County, SC prompted the founders of Miss Ruby’s Kids to look for ways to alleviate this growing problem. Miss Ruby’s Kids was founded in February, 2003 by sisters Jo Fortuna and Betsy Marlow as a replication of the nationally known Parent-Child Home Program. It was initially sponsored by Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church and is now an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Miss Ruby’s Kids began working with five families in October, 2003, and now serves over 170 children in the three program areas. A parent is a child’s first and most important teacher. Miss Ruby’s Kids knows that with a warm lap, a good book, and an ample supply of love, parents have all the tools necessary to start their children on their way to a happy, successful future. We should know; we help them do it every day!

Our Mission

Miss Ruby’s Kids enables identified families and caregivers to inspire a passion for learning in their children. We help prepare parents to be their child’s first, best teacher and support both parents and child throughout the child’s school career.

Our Vision

All children in Georgetown County will enter school prepared to learn, supported by their families, and will graduate from high school as productive citizens of their community.
